It’s Unwise for Buhari to Compare Killings by Fulani Herdsmen Under Him and Jonathan;
Angry reactions have trailed the statement by the presidency comparing the number of people killed by Fulani Herdsmen under the Goodluck Jonathan administration with those already killed under the present administration.
The longstanding face off between farmers and Fulani herdsmen in Benue state assumed a new dimension in early January with cases of successive killings by Fulani militia in the past few days.
The killings having heightened with a death toll of 80 persons, fuelled series of speculations on alleged unresponsiveness on the part of the Federal Government to take adequate steps.
Some Nigerians have insinuated that the slow action of the federal government is caused by an affinity of the President to the Fulani stock of Nigeria.
The Presidential spokesperson, Mr. Femi Adesina, while debunking such claims said it was very unkind of Nigerians to link the killings to the president owing to his background as a Fulani.
He, however, drew the ire of Nigerians when he made reference to Jonathan’s administration with the claim that over 756 people were killed by herdsmen in two years under the former President.
Adesina who backed his statements with statistics further stated that “it would, therefore, be wrong to insinuate that the recent killings happened because President Muhammadu Buhari is a Fulani man.”
Miffed by the statement, Nigerians who took to the social media to express their displeasure wondered why the current administration must always defend itself at the detriment of the previous administration.
They also queried the presidency if it has any plan to beat the records of Jonathan’s administration in such regard before doing the needful.
“Jonathan has been out of power for close to three years now. Enough of this blame game, a Twitter user by the name Elizabeth Olus stated.
Marveled at the Presidency’s statement another Twitter user, Okoro Abedenego, said “I am so surprised this is coming from you sir. But all the same, we are saying all this killings should stop. Enough of the blood shading”
In her reaction also, Silviia said, “Okay…..and quadruple that number of non-herdsmen have been killed in less than 4years under PMB. Please killings of innocent lives by herdsmen must stop”
What a shame. A supposedly progressive government comparing their gross failure with that of a rejected regime. A candidate with an F9 score comparing with someone with a P8, another Twitter handle stated.
Another handle by the name Lucky Eni said the comment was unlike the previous administrations, According to him, “Jonathan never blamed Obasanjo, Yar’adua and the others, he tried his best to make impact to the best of his abilities, he was not sectional, tribalistic, or autocratic rather he was democratic and obeyed the rules of law.
Shallow and Hollow, Empty and Void, Clueless and Tactless, Incohesive and Incoherent. Just a Few words to describe this Government, says Danny Attah.
According to Odu Obodumu, “Exactly why the government should be serious. Government should tackle them now or they want to beat GEJ’s figure? The herdsmen issues must be tackled now.
“So if this is the case, then what is the change APC came with? It is very unfortunate that Buhari government link all their failures to GEJ really unfortunate, another handle, Idongeist Umo also stated.
Nsikak Udoh on his part said, “It is shameful to hear people make this kind of references. Is this a reason, ground or justification for it to be allowed to continue unabated? He asked.
