Saraki, Dogara fight back: Why we altered the 2018 budget

Image
The two chambers of the National Assembly say the decision to adjust the 2018 Budget presented by President Muhammadu Buhari was to correct lopsidedness and imbalance in the estimates. The lawmakers made the position known on Friday at a news conference addressed by the Spokespersons of the Senate and House of Representatives, Senator Aliyu Sabi-Abdullahi and Rep. Abdulrazak Namdas, respectively, in Abuja. The National Assembly had, while passing the Appropriation Bill, increased the figure from N8.16 trillion proposed by Buhari to N9.12 trillion, indicating an increase of about N578 billion. And, before signing the Bill on Wednesday at the Presidential Villa, Buhari picked holes with the action of the lawmakers, observing that some of the new provisions in the budget were not properly processed. He had said, “I am concerned about some of the changes that the National Assembly has made to the budget proposals that I presented. ‘’The logic behind the constitutional direction that

My grouse with Obasanjo, Buhari – Soyinka

Image
A Nobel laureate, Wole Soyinka, has described a former president, Olusegun Obasanjo, as a ‘hypocrite’ who has crossed the red line several times. Mr Obasanjo is “one of the greatest hypocritical leaders this nation ever had” the laureate said on Friday. He was speaking at a conversation with journalists at the international Press Institute (IPI) world congress holding at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Abuja. The comments came as response to a question from a member of the audience on why Mr Soyinka ‘hates’ Mr Obasanjo and a former military head of state, Sani Abacha. First, Mr Soyinka criticised President Muhammadu Buhari for posing an anti-corruption posture and yet honouring a leader like late Mr Abacha. “If I’m walking on the street and I see a statue raised in honour of a torturer, a murderer and thief so recognised by the entire world, that we are still chasing his loot. His loot is still surfacing all over the world. And then, i’m driving on the street and I see a structure i

2018 budget: NASS tackles Buhari

Image
The National Assembly yesterday tackled President Muhammadu Buhari over his comments on the 2018 Appropriation Act, stating that whatever alteration it made to the budget was in line with its constitutional powers and in the interest of the country. Speaking at joint press conference addressed by the Chairman Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Senator Sabi Abdullahi and his House of Representatives counterpart, Hon Abdulrasak Namdas, the Senate spokesman said figures bandied by President Buhari on the budget were incorrect. President Buhari at the signing of the 2018 Budget earlier in the week had declared that the National Assembly, altered the budget estimates by reducing funding for some key projects, as well as, including new projects in the Appropriation Act, thereby making the implementation of the budget difficult. However, Abdullahi said the adjustments made to budget estimates presented by the Executive in terms of locations, cost and number of projects approve

How your blood type affects your health

Image
In reality, there are more than 300 blood types, but they all fall into one of four key groups — type A, B, AB or O, collectively known as ABO. Your parents each pass down their blood type genes and the mix determines your type. So, a type O mum and a type B dad could have a type O or B child, whereas a type O mum and dad could only have a type O child. Your blood group is determined by genes that you inherit from your parents. It depends on substances in your blood: antigens are proteins found on the surface of red blood cells that cause antibodies to be produced. According to Dr. Alex Nwobi, what makes the four types different from each other is a molecule known as an antigen that attaches to the outside of your red blood cells. “If you imagine a red cell as a doughnut, think of these molecules as the sprinkles and trimmings on the doughnut. These antigens are also the reason why blood type might play a role in your health.” Nwobi noted that they are not all shaped the same w

Evil uncle: Father of five rapes 8-year-old niece

Image
The birth of a new day was gleefully announced by the dissonant tunes of cocks in the groggy and agrarian community of Umudu Egbengwu Nimo in Anambra State. It was June 8 and the time 7am. An innocent eight-year-old girl, Treasure, (surname withheld) had no premonition of danger lurking surreptitiously on her way to defecate in the bush. The moment came straight out of Dante’s infernal hell. Chukwujekwu Otugo,45 and a father of five had ambushed his would-be victim and had carnal knowledge of the girl. Evil desire tinkled a merry note at his feet, and he joyfully accepted it. He danced heartily to the charming rhythms. His flesh conquered him and now he has to pay for that hour of iniquity. Bitter ordeal Recounting her daughter’s ordeal, Ms Delight Ifechukwu, a widow, told Saturday Sun that Otugo, an uncle to the victim, enticed her with N50 and even called her his wife prior to executing the dastardly act. She added that he threatened to kill the victim if she ever revealed th

Okorocha, who lost out at the ward, local government and state congresses in the state, is considered a key factor in the party’s effort at retaining the governorship position. And the Presidency. Already, Saturday Vanguard had been told that some of his adversaries who are contesting for various national positions would not be returned. One of them is the party’s National Organising Secretary, Sen Osita Izunaso, who was confirmed would not retain his position. Saturday Vanguard gathered on Wednesday that apart from the party’s Contact and Integration Committee and the Reconciliation Committee currently reaching out to all disgruntled members who left the PDP, the National Working Committee of the party led by Prince Uche Secondus has come up with yet another means of reaching out to Obasanjo, the first elected President on the platform of the party in the 1999 general election. The move, according to findings involves the deployment of Colonel Habibu Shuaibu (retd), a former Military Administrator of Niger and Plateau States to help convey the message of reconciliation to the former chairman, Board of Trustees (BoT) of the party. Yakubu Dogara, President of the Senate and Speaker of the House of Representatives respectively. As heads of the two arms of the legislative chambers, Saraki and Dogara have, in the past few months squared up against the Presidency; a development that played no mean role in the delay that characterised the signing of the 2018 Appropriation Bill into Law by President Buhari on Wednesday. President Muhammadu Buhari Following the inputs of the federal parliaments into the appropriation bill, the President was expected to put pen to paper on the all-important document penultimate Wednesday, only for the signing to be postponed because of the unavailability of the heads of the parliamentary chambers. Saturday Vanguard gathered that while Saraki initially left for Saudi Ara

World Cup: Super Eagles Prepare For Epic Battle With Iceland

Image
The Super Eagles will play a make or mar 2018 FIFA World Cup game against Iceland today in Volgograd. Their second group B match could well determine who progresses to the last-16 stage of the competition alongside Croatia, who beat Argentina 3-0 on Thursday night. Coach Gernot Rohr’s team flew into Volgograd from their Essentuki base on Thursday morning before taking up residence at the Hampton-by-Hilton Volgograd Hotel. After a 2-0 loss to high-flying Croatia on Saturday, the Eagles require an outright victory against Iceland, whose defensive play has been hailed in the competition. But Rohr believes nothing is impossible. He said, “We have watched the game against Croatia again to see our mistakes so that we can correct them. It will be a tough game. We have to be at our best and be more professional with our defending especially from set-pieces. “We have to be fully focused and not lose concentration all through the game. I believe with hard work we can get a good result. I

Lawmakers under attack for Budget 2018 alterations

Image

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) and the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) were also outraged. The lawmakers cut 4,700 projects amounting to N347billion from what President Muhammadu Buhari presented and introduced 6,403 projects of their own amounting to N578billion. The President, who reluctantly signed the Bill, plans to send a supplementary budget to the lawmakers. According to him, many of the projects unilaterally removed are critical to infrastructure development and economic recovery. These include the Lagos-Ibadan expressway, the East-West Road, The Enugu Airport, the Itakpe-Ajaokuta road, the mass transit and major arterial road in the FCT and the take-off grant for the Maritime University. The lawmakers also raised their own expenditure from N125bill
