Buhari Has Lost Integrity, Failed Nigerians, Obasanjo Tells German Broadcaster
In a fresh and fiery interview with German broadcaster, Deutsche Welle (DW), former President Olusegun Obasanjo has again knocked the Muhammadu Buhari regime.
Obasanjo’s latest attack on President Buhari comes barely three weeks after he indicted the current government of ineptness.
The former president had called for Buhari’s retirement from office in 2019.
Speaking, however, in the fresh interview Obasanjo regretted that Buhari has failed to meet the expectations of Nigerians since he took over from the immediate past government of Goodluck Jonathan.
He said it was only democratic for him to ask the president to step down in 2019, having failed to keep up with his campaign promises.
“It is the right decision now, for us to see that the man who is taking over from Jonathan has not met the expectations of Nigerians, that’s what democracy is all about. Democracy is about change. But if you think that is not the right decision, then you are not a democrat. But I am a democrat and tomorrow if I take a decision and things don’t work out the way we expect them to work out in a democracy, then you make a change.”
Asked if Buhari’s anti-corruption war is a ruse or has failed, Obasanjo said:
“I would say he was probably looking outside, he wasn’t looking inside, because if you are fighting corruption [and] corruption is becoming rife then you also have to turn your attention inward,” adding that “there is no point in fighting corruption beyond you while you have corruption (in front of) your nose.”
Asked further on if Buhari’s widely regarded personality as a man of integrity among most Nigerians had changed, Obsanjo answered: “I don’t know which Nigerians you are talking about. Maybe Nigerians of four years ago. Talk to Nigerians today.”
