Onnoghen: Buhari invites APC senators ahead of Senate's meeting

Aheadof the Senate's resumptionon Tuesday, PresidentMuhammadu Buhari has invited senators ofthe All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Presidentialvilla, Abuja for a meeting over the suspension ofthe Chief Justice of Nigeria, Walter Onnoghen.
Thesenators arereportedly meeting with the president on Monday, January28, to prepare onhow to defend the president's decision to suspend Onnoghen.
ThePunch reports that the invitations to the meeting were signedby the Director General ofthe APC Presidential CampaignOrganisation, who is also the Minister of Transportation, Mr Rotimi Amaechi.
However, anAPC sourcewho spoke to the press said:“So, weneedto talk toour members in the Senateand impress it on them nottoallow Saraki toimpose his personal opinion on them.”
APCmembers ofthe House of representatives have repotedly scheduledan emergency meeting for Monday as well.
Themeeting was called by the majority leader, Femi Gbajabiamila, via textmessages onSundayevening.
Members of the opposition party, PDP have accused Presidency ofinviting the APC senators to bribe themahead of the Senate's meeting on Tuesday.
ThePDP National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan said:“President Buhari is not only apprehensivethat the Senatemight sanction himfor violatingtheconstitution and usurping itsstatutory duties regarding thehandlingof issues related toa CJN, the parliament may also open an inquest into how President Buhari, who parades himself as Mr Integrity, allegedly procuredan order from the CCT upon which he announced theillegalsuspension of the CJN.
“There are reportsthat the saidorder is suspicious and subjectto investigations, being notargued or issued in the opencourt; following which a distressedBuhari Presidency nowseeks tocorruptand undermine the Senate.”
Evritinnaija earlier reported that the National JudicialCouncil (NJC) reportedlycalled anemergency meeting over the federal government’s suspension of Walter Onnoghen from the office of Chief Justice of Nigeria(CJN), over alleged non-declaration of assetsbefore the Code ofConduct Tribunal (CCT).
Themeeting was called by some NJC members inlinewith its rulesandwillbe held in Abuja by 10am onMonday, January28.
