Stop your uncharitable attacks on INEC, Yoruba group warns Oshiomhole.
Pan Yoruba Youth group, Yoruba Revolutionary Assembly (YORA), has expressed disaffection with the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, over what it termed his penchant for attacking the integrity of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) “anytime he stands before a camera audience”.
The group said the time has come for President Muhammadu Buhari to call Oshiomhole to order, “as Nigerians will no longer tolerate such conducts, which are not only maligning the integrity of the leadership of INEC, but also the country’s electoral integrity, before the international community”.
The group in a statement issued recently in Lagos and signed by its Secretary General, Olarinde Joe, said that “Oshiomole should by now get over his self-imposed disappointments on the APC, during the last general elections and look forward to how he can repair the damages that his dictatorial leadership has brought upon the fortunes of the party, as no amount of his vituperations can erode the belief of Nigerians in the sincerity, credibility and capacity of INEC to conduct free, fair and credible elections, as it has done with the conduct of the 2019 general elections.”
YORA wondered why the chairman of the country’s ruling party, “who is supposed to be bridge builders, has chosen to become an antagonist of a neutral body like INEC, while also unduly overheating the polity.”
“As stakeholders in the Nigerian project, we appeal to the APC National Chairman, to know that he is a lone ranger in this infamous adventure and should therefore immediately count INEC out of any misfortune that the APC might have suffered during the election, which all available evidences have shown, are the handiwork of Mr Oshiomhole,” YORA said.
It urged INEC “not to be bothered by Oshiomhole’s persistent attack on the commission and its leadership”, restating that “the belief of Nigerians in INEC as a commission is nonnegotiable; just as that of the chairman of INEC, Professor Mahmoud Yakubu, who is a man of proven integrity.”
“Finally, we wish to remind Mr. Adams Oshiomhole that no matter the amount of his self-inflicted anger, INEC will continue to carry out its duties with competence and unbending neutrality, without succumbing to the antics and desperations of politicians like him,” the statement concluded.
